ROS - 'Robot Operating System' to help build robot applications

Post by triplus »

Lately i have been hearing a lot about ROS.
What is ROS?

The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a set of software libraries and tools that help you build robot applications. From drivers to state-of-the-art algorithms, and with powerful developer tools, ROS has what you need for your next robotics project. And it's all open source.

Hence opening a general discussion. Mainly to hear some opinions and to better understand if there is potential for any synergies in between projects.

I have read a bit more about it, basically ROS is a robotics oriented middleware, one can use to build robotics based applications around it. From FreeCAD perspective therefore somebody could i guess create a FreeCAD module, leveraging both FreeCAD and ROS offerings, similar to i guess FreeCAD Robot Workbench. Looking at the solution, such as ROSVITA:

I see some solid modeling, Assembly 4, pyflow ...
