ATTN: FreeCAD-Bundle Weekly builds for Windows is confusing users

Post by Kunda1 »

Currently the amount of Win builds on the weekly-builds is confusing the heck out of people

ok, what do you think about this description:

Various bundles are offered here, which are renewed weekly.
1. Appimages (conda-based) run on most Linux distributions.
2. Dmg's (conda-based) run on osx.
3. There are different versions for windows
3.1 Bundles created using conda (need to be unzipped)
3.2 LP (libpack) bundles using FreeCAD's own libpack.
3.2.1 exe: directly executable version
3.2.2 zip: Bundles that need to be unzipped.

I guess we can delete the vc17.x-x86-64.7z files. But I am not quite sure.

exe: installer

Directly executable to me would be a portable version that's a single exe file

Speaking of this, I guess VC is the msvc version used for compilation? Is the vc14 in the Conda releases name correct?

Well there is the 300MB download size difference. Any idea why that is? There might be people with limited data ...

7z vs zip, rationale behind using zip format was that it has built-in support in explorer, no need for additional software.

The top four entries (created with VC19) are installer versions and include the documentation.

The next two (created with VC17) are the traditional "unpack and run" version (not installed) that have been used to distribute development versions for a long, long time. They do not include documentation.

I do not know why there is a difference in the Visual Studio version chosen, or whether it makes any significant difference. The LibPack and the compiler versions (not shown) are important.

The 300Mb is the help file which power/dev users don't need IMHO, I'm all for smaller weekly builds and we can check the help file when near to release.
