[Active question] FreeCAD package 0.19 on Fedora 33 crash upon open file

Post by atererus »

CURRENT STATUS: a question needs answering.

Fedora 33 Workstation as of March 13th, 2021 ships version: 2020-11-25.
For me it crashes, and that is solved by using FreeCAD_0.19-24267-Linux-Conda_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage

BUG: crashes in glibc/coin upon --run-test 0 (run all tests ), test_facebinder coredumps in the listed binaries.
solved by using FreeCAD_0.19-24267-Linux-Conda_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage instead.

BINARIES INVOLVED:
glibc-2.32-4.fc33.x86_64
Coin4-4.0.0-7.fc33.x86_64
freecad-1:0.19-0.3.20201125gita50ae33557.fc33.2.x86_64

discussion found here : https://ask.fedoraproject.org/t/freecad ... a31/5320/5
Questions remaining : How to help the package maintainer to get a stable verion on Fedora (33)?

FreeCAD crashes. LibC/LibCoin fails in "Open File" and in "test_facebinder" (--test-run 0)

Yu have created one monster post and now several topics in various subforums. You don't give any hints where to look in the big topic so there is really no advantage in this technique, every interested reader has to go through the whole topic.
Please consider to extract the relevant details and move them directly to the subforums. If nothing is left, you can even delete the post, as long as nobody has replied to it.
A Sketcher Lecture with in-depth information is available in English, auf Deutsch, en français, en español.

Thanx for the constructive input. I hope the situation improved. I mis-use the topic now for a personal view of me and FreeCAD.

I found the version number and it seems way to old. Downloading of the development AppImage takes hours, and the first try failed. The next will finish tomorow.

FreeCAD_0.19-24267-Linux-Conda_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage installed which solves the problem for me.
Still the FreeCAD package is (may be) broken on Fedora.

use Debian: the FreeCAD package maintainer is active here.
try the Assembly4 workbench for FreCAD — tutorials here and here

The point is that users on Fedora should have an positive experience. What if people do "yum install freecad" and the next thing is crash? Why not put the appimage in the fedora package destribution, or at least static linked libraries if the Fedora distribution doesn't provide the right ones. IMHO It should work, or not be in the stable distrubtion at all. Right?

Go ask IBM, it's their distribution.

As far as I know, IBM is not the FreeCAD package maintainer, that depens on volunteers. And as far as I know, he is doing his best, and is here on the forum. I want to help working on it. I am not asking for a solution, just for an opinion and direction. Give me directions to work on so I can help.
