installation and first start.

Have installed freecad 18.4 on two windows 10 machines with the same result. Attempt to open an example drawing or a new drawing results in a black screen. I found a suggestion to change the system variable qt_opengl to desktop. cannot locate the reference system variable except with regard to a mac os. Okay I admit to being old and stupid, but what am I doing wrong?
