Export a File to IFC replace holes with hexagonal

Post by Kartoffelpüre »

I have a plate 20m long and wide, inside this plate there are some holes with 1cm diameter. If I export them into IFC. IFC viewer shows instead of a hole with a diameter, a hole with a hexagonal shape.

in my opinion it is correct because it keeps the ifc file small and fast. ifc is only intended for referencing, it is sufficient for that. in other cases I would e.g. use steps

Normally I would agree with you but in this case I have here it is a Problem If holes appear as hexagon.
I would prefer having holes as holes in the Export. Speaking about the IFC File size. It's more a Problem if repeating appearance of the same body is not deduplicated. E.g. If I have a screw 500 times in the IFC, the file contain the body 500 times instead of one times and all link to the same body.

there are companies where screws, threads, weld seams, etc. are not modeled so that your models remain fast

It would be nice if this were the common practice. Unfortunately, I don't experience it that way.
My current situation is that I have to place a Machine into a given IFC. A third Party double check for Collision. To be able to do it, the Files have to be complete.

I know such collision tests from the field of architecture, where screws, welds, etc. are not important. every application is different

Back to my initial request. Do you know a way to get more detailed Body data? Or is it a current Limitation that FreeCAD could only export tessellated Data?

There have been improvements on this within the ifc format.
I would recommend to ask on osarch.org.. even if mainly for architect, i believe someone could ask about this resolution problem.
