Here (in Switzerland) the multiple material walls in one representation are no longer used. Most architects and most cad (most architects use either archicad or vectorworks) do save multilayered walls as assembly. Thus every wall layer has its own representation in the IFC.

I really like this very much because it is easy to serialise a IFC only with the load bearing wall layers like brick and concrete.

There is another advantage. If ifcmateriallayer are used for walls, than for the properties of each wall layer ifccomplexproperty is used. This makes it even more difficult to read and visualize properties.

Thus I have not used the option to split the representation according the materiallayer in IfcOpenShell for years.

For anyone interested, OSArch started a funding campaign to develop the ability to visualize wall/floor layers in both BlenderBIM & FreeCAD. The lion's share of development will be in IfcOpenShell.

For every dollar raised, #OSArch will match that dollar from their general funding pool.
