Translation of TaskCustomizeFormat

Post by chennes »

Right now the TaskCustomizeFormat dialog has basically all of its strings marked as "translatable" in the UI file. However, the majority of these strings are really just symbols, and translating them doesn't seem (to me) to make sense. My question is, do ANY of these things make sense for translators to be changing, or should all of those things be removed from translation?

Here's the dialog, for reference:

I'm no expert at GD&T, but AFAIK, these symbols all come from ASME Y14.5 and various ISO standards, so they probably don't change for different languages.

My guess would then be that translation is not required.

OK, I've set all of them to be non-translatable in git commit 89432a969d.

I agree with the non-translation of the symbols, but please let the translations of the tooltips remain when hovering over them.

Sorry I don't know programming and I can't interpret the git code

Yes, for sure, I left the tooltips translatable, I only disabled translation of the symbols themselves.

Greetings to the Community!
In a nutshell GD&T are symbols that refer to standards regulated on "specific product tolerances" as defined by ISO (GPS).
In practice they refer to the shape, size and positioning ratio of a product, while "tolerance" indicates the allowed error, therefore they do not need to be translated which is, however, necessary for the description "popup "of the various buttons.
In my humble opinion, the important thing to take into account is that this symbolism should refer to a specific "font-GD & T" (permanently inserted as a "library" in FreeCad) for example "osifont" in which the size of the characters can be set (perhaps on the same entry form) independently from the system one and "osifont-GD & T" would be editable / modifiable / updatable only by authorized persons after a specific and justified request.
Some "debates" on the subject:
