[Enhancing Request] add a Body Directory - (replaced)

Post by Kartoffelpüre »

--> I replaced this Enhancement Request with this one

If I try to Export Data I have to select Bodies for the Export. Sometimes It's Difficult to Select the Bodies I want.

Please add a Body Group to the Model Tree.

Some skills this directory should have:
  • Automatically Updating Main-group (Body, Surface, Curves, Annotation)
  • Ability to add new Directories where I could drag and drop object into it from List or graphic area
  • It should be possible to select a Directory for Export Files
    • The structure with Subdirectories is used for Exporting, if destination file type allow structured Data (e.g. STEP)

Possibly addressed in @realthunder's pending issue #2759

I would rather suggest that you make a macro to select all bodies, a persistent object in the tree who's only purpose is to gather other objects by type is a waste IMO so I don't see this being implemented any time soon.

I know this type of directory from other CAD where I use them in many cases.
I see a lot of possibilities.
Body Directory:
  • Choose the directory to have a "Select all"
  • Fast access to bodies and their properties
The Names of the Bodys in this directory could depending to properties:
    • the name of last Feature modified the Body
    • Volume
    • Max dimension X/Y/Z
    • Custom Properties
  • A kind of dynamical grouping could help group bodies by same geometry or property and help detect the count of identical
  • Allow creating Sub-Directories
    • Sub-Directories could help structure a Bom for a bomtable.
    • Sub-Directories could help structure acording to certain needs.

You can use groups to group things yourself, for selecting all bodies a macro is a better choice

Only If it's written by professionals (not me)

that's nice but kind of Data management by logic helps to not forget to and update something.

Half of FreeCAD is written by amateurs, don't be afraid to try. A macro to select all elements of a certain type shouldn't be too complicated
