How to offset a sketch from the plane, or place on a face of geometry?

Post by hph »

Code: Select all

OS: Windows 10 Version 2009
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.20.29177 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-20
Hash: 68e337670e227889217652ddac593c93b5e8dc94
Python 3.8.10, Qt 5.15.2, Coin 4.0.1, Vtk 8.2.0, OCC 7.6.2
Locale: English/United States (en_US)

I want to move this circle sketch from the YZ plane to one of the body features in front of it. Is there a way to do this? It's trivial in CREO but I can't figure it out here. Also the "Position" properties of said sketch cannot be changed, for reasons unknown to me.

Project is attached :)

Create a datum plane (PartDesign Plane) and place the sketch on it.

Shal that's what I want to do. But don't I have to have a sketch of a circle to locate the hole? The Hole page on the wiki is very unclear IMHO.

I really don't have the time or energy to digest the attachments tutorial so I'll just try the datum plane method.

A nice feature would be to be able to select some planar geometry, then click the sketch button and either a datum plane is created automatically parallel to the geometry, or abstracted even further by binding the datum plane to the geometry and hiding it, to be like other CAD software.

Thanks guys :)

Select the face and create a sketch or datum...magic it's oriented to the selected item.

There are even macros that will attach it to a base plane afterward to avoid TNP.

Ah true! I swear I tried to do this in the recent past and it did NOT work...

Ugh... frustrations of learning new software lol

Thanks demonlibra, but for some reason those parameters are "grayed out" when I'm working on my project. I don't know why.
