[SOLVED] poor frame rate if I use displaylink dock and external screens

Post by schafatz »

Hi everyone,
I use FreeCAD 0.19.3 (FreeCAD_0.19.3-Linux-Conda_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage) on a Laptop (Ryzen 7 4800 H , 16GB Ram) and run an Ubuntu 20.04 off the shelve.
This works flawlessly. 3D objects are being rendered as I'd expect at a sustainable frame rate of at least 40FPS. Same when I connect an external display directly to the machine via HDMI.

As soon as I connect the Laptop to a displaylink dock via USB C the frame rate drops (0.1-5FPS) and FC becomes de facto inoperable. Enabling software OpenGL hasn't had any positive effect.

Anybody facing the same issues? Does anybody have a hint where to start my investigation to sort out the problem?
Configuration? Drivers? ... I'm a bit puzzled.

Thanks!

Please note that you need to restart FreeCAD to see an effect after changing that setting.

If you do the simplest form of research you'll see that Displaylink is specifically designed for applications that are mainly static such as email, spreadsheets etc not gaming, 3D apps so your feedback is exactly what is expected.

No, I use the Ryzen's GPU. Don't know anything more about the underlying technology, sorry.

Hi Syres!
I don't agree but would you please share your source of knowledge, for my personal interest? Thanks!
E.g. the Googleearth webversion works perfect with my Displaylink setup.

But the most important: I found a working solution solving my issue!
Choosing the Wayland-mode at login instead of X11-mode makes FreeCAD and Googleearth pro for Ubuntu work like charm!

I am not an expert in graphic card usage, but just saying, that a webversion is not the same as a graphiccard calculated output, FreeCAD is no someone else computer (a. k. a. "Cloud") program.

Maybe wayland can bypass the output. Anyway, as long it works.
