If I want to unwrap a mesh, I would like to place one small hole in each face to orient whether It's inside or outside. Is there a quick easy way?

Sorry in image, not yo, should be you.

- Make a Shape from the mesh
- cut a cylinder from the Shape.

I don't see how a (round!) hole helps you to distinguish inside and outside. It will look from both sides the same. You should consider somthing like the letter "R" instead.

I would settle for a letter, just don't know an easy way to place it on face or a ruled surface. An alternative, is there a way to tell mesh to layout where a certain side is up?

You can attach things to a face. See Bance's excellent Basic Attachment Tutorial how to do so.
