Can not start a sketch.
So, I was finally getting used to freecad 0.19.0 when I logged on today to find nothing working.
Got online to find freecad 0.20 available and downloaded it.
Opened up freecad 0.20 and started a new part design only to find that the combo view with models and tasks windows didn't pop up like it normally does.
Opened the combo view from the views and panels selection.
Shows "unnamed 1" in the models, but no tasks. No origin selection, no sketch selection, selected "start new sketch" from the tool bar, and it opened the same page, where I can not do any sketch work because I have not started a sketch because I have not selected an origin plain because there are no origin plains to choose from.
I can start a cube, or a rectangle, or a cylinder using the pre-generated 3D designs, which I can not edit because I can not sketch.
I can load an existing document. But I can not start a sketch, either independently, or from any face or surface within the existing part.
Every time there's an update I have to re-learn how to use freecad because either something is missing or it no longer works.
I'm about ready to spend the 1000's of dollars to get a new license for auto desk. This is rediculous!

Re: Can not start a sketch.
First try to reset your preferences by renaming the appropriate folder (won't tell you where it is, you didn't tell your OS).

So we could know what OS you are using and what FC version (There are many around so 0.20 is telling only a "partial" informtaion)
As many CAD are switching to a "pay per use" license, so probably you will spend countless hour working on a file that will be not readable and usable if you don't pay the "yearly fee", and if maybe "company XXX" will fail, and the "pay per use mechanism" is not permitting to use after xx time before expiration.
How you worth your work, that using this scheme is not yours anymore.
With old license scheme, you "buy a program" and you had an unlimited license that permit you to use the program, so if a software house fails, you could even maintain an old machine with a copy of this program to read and print and convert "your work", you are on your own, but you have a mean to not waste countless "man/hours" of modelling work.
With new license scheme your work is somewhat "hostage" of the "financial health", "politics decisions", or "strategic choices" of another company, and this is not an "hypothetical scenarios".
Sadly this "fact" is sold as the new way to have a everytime updated software not telling these implications.

Are you sure that is not XXX dollars per month?

Re: Can not start a sketch.
What is "rediculous" is that you think a sudden failure in FreeCAD 0.19 or FreeCAD 0.20 is some sort of program error.
Many, many thousands of users have been successful with both released versions.
Do what you want. Buy another program.
But the problem is local to your computer, not a fault in FreeCAD.
Help is available on this forum, but you need to cooperate.

Re: Can not start a sketch.
I am runnig freecad 0.20 on 64-bit windows 10.
Reason I go straight to software issues is every time I install an updated versio, it's because my older version stops working entirely or straight up crashes every time I do something. After installing latest version I ALWAYS have some sort of issue where something is not available, doesn't work.
When 0.19 was release I had to wait a week before it would allow me to extrude a solid from a sketch. Now that I have 0.20, there is no origin plain to select from to be able to start ANYTHING except for a pre-determined solid that it won't let me edit.
And as of a month ago, auto desk inventor was 1200 per year. Or Free for students. Reason I went to freecad is because they're the only software I've found that's NOT on a subscription basis that has the capabilities I'm looking for without spending thousands on yearly licenses.

What is rediculous is that I never have any problems except for when there's a new version.
Re: Can not start a sketch.
hm, sound a bit ominous that fc 19 did not allow extrusion, not sure everyone agrees on that historic description.

which wb / workflow are we talking about here - at least for me making a new body in pd and then selecting "new sketch" gives the datum planes for selection. also a sketch in sketcher wb is showing a dialogue with orientation choices.
maybe if you post some pictures explaining your trouble, this thread might become constructive.

Re: Can not start a sketch.
there are no origin features unless you create a Part or a Body, this has always been the case, so you are probably getting confused on how to use the software, I recommend resetting your preferences as you likely changed stuff you didn't understand (rename or remove %APPDATA%/FreeCAD folder), then go through some tutorials again. Are you sure you are in the right workbench? To me it sounds like you are trying to use Part Design stuff but are in Part or Sketcher workbench, make you sure you are switching to the correct workbench that you want to use.
Regarding having troubles whenever you update, I have never experienced that, updates went smoothly all the way from 0.17 through 0.20 including point releases in between. Never had any version stop working. If a version stopped working then there is another underlying issue in your pc, FreeCAD doesn't do auto updates (it doesn't even check if there are updates available) so the software simply can't have changed on it's own, releasing 0.20 has no effect on 0.19, heck there's people around still running 0.16 fine because they have old models that aren't easily migrated to the new Part Design from 0.17+
Also there hasn't been any major workflow change in FreeCAD since 0.17 so I doubt it's the updates that make you relearn anything, you would only need to learn the new stuff but what you where already using would still be there.
