thanks a lot... I'm going to see if I can reach the discussion on default STEP parameterswmayer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 24, 2022 6:22 am git commit 710e16b340 adds a class for consistent access of the parameters
git commit b00044c656 initializes the preferences page
git commit fed9f20f482 changes the algorithm to use the above class for consistent access
If the default value of a parameter should be changed then only ImportExportSettings must be adjusted.
FreeCad forces me to save a file when a .step file is loaded.

Hi @wmayer and @realthunder
I'm attaching what I had as preferred settings for STEP export (later on I will put also import),
following the discussion with other users w/ commercial CADs ...
https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic. ... 21#p142721
(I'm putting both master branch and link branch settings)
First attempt:
suggested default STEP export:
Master Branch Link Branch they are both identical
Note: I have the followings
- Units for export of STEP -> [mm]
- [unchecked] Write out curves in parametric space of surface
- [checked] Export invisible objects
- [unchecked] Export single object placement
- [unchecked] Use legacy exporter
- Scheme -> [AP214 International Standard]

thanks a lot
I'm going to retrieve also the info on importing settings
Re: FreeCad forces me to save a file when a .step file is loaded.
Why school were invented tonteach people how to read and write if it simple to do.
Sadly without some teaching and some efforts I could not write in devangari, chinese, and japanese too and probably even in klingon.
Are you able to learn without a manual complex things?
Probably not as you asking here for advice.
RTFM his a legitimate answer, if a proper manual exist and sadly there is not yet a "complete manual" but as many people are able to model in FC someone has found a way to make the job.
Here you will usually learn many things, I save many forum post for "future reference" and it is usually a good thing, sadly you have to read them when your memory is not helping.

Re: FreeCad forces me to save a file when a .step file is loaded.
Should have started your topic with "I want to remove this very specific prompt because I find it annoying to make one click" instead of beating around the bush about freecad forcing you to save files.
Re: FreeCad forces me to save a file when a .step file is loaded.
Hi @wmayer and @realthunder
here the full import/export setting I found the more adherent to what I get with CAD Assistant of OpenCascade (CADA is free to download without registration and it is available for Linux, win, osx, android, ios)
That should be the standard preset offered in case of a new 'clear' installation that would help in the best interoperability with other CADs

Re: FreeCad forces me to save a file when a .step file is loaded.
I disagree : invisible objects shouldn't be exported in a STEP file by default. Else, how do you export a subset of a large assembly ? Take the example of an assembly, where you have the interface data (allowed / forbidden volumes) and also many sub-assemblies. What you will want to do is to export the main assembly with the interface data, but not the sub-assemblies, as STEP file, and send that – small ! – STEP file to the designers of each sub-assembly as reference : how do you achieve that ?
I don't have an opinion for import.
