chrisb points out (above) that the English keyboard equivalent of Suppress would be the Delete key. I had not heard the term Suppress before. Now I think I understand. I'm learning all kinds of stuff here!

That's a bit confusing; Suppress has been used in CAD for years to hide or restrict the operation to an object, never a delete. Makes you not want to push the suppress button.

In French "Delete" is "Supprimer". So I guess it was just a translation issue, caused by the very similar words "supprimer" and "suppress" which have in a wider sense a similar, but not identical meaning.
