We are talking about (and yes, it still works perfectly fine in the latest snap version) translucent appearance when item is selected in tree view, like so:

I went through all the options and settings again.
As a reminder:
Menu: Tools -> Edit Parameters
On the tree: BaseApp -> Preferences-> View
Key: ShowSelectionBoundingBox
Key value: false

additionally in preferences
General -> Selection tab
Preselect the object in 3D view when mouse over the tree item - checked

Display -> Colors tab
first two options - checked

This option is very useful when working with complex shapes or those that are supposed to have empty spaces inside ...
