The boy CAN be TAUGHT!!

Post by SteveS »

This is about my 4th or 5th iteration of this same little project. This isn't the project that sucked me into attempting to learn FreeCAD again, but it's a good way to test my knowledge, find my limitations and areas that I poorly understand. This is just a single component of what will be a larger assembly (really no more complex than what I have here) but it's getting me started...

I was particularly pleased with how I got this fully parameterized using first a Master Sketch, then a Spreadsheet, and I could change the angles and dimensions without anything blowing up!

The one thing I couldn't figure out how to do was render that compound angle as a round dowel. All I could do with a cylinder solid was to transform it in one plane, not two. I achieved this using a boolean of two intersecting pads, one at 14º, one at 30º

Any suggestions on that are welcomed.

This is the original design dims, w/a 30º angle when viewed from the front, and 38mm flange widths:

This shows the result of changing that angle to 40º and the flange width to 75mm:

Oh - sorry, didn't know that was the thing to do. New here.

Here ya go. Comments/suggestions gleefully welcomed. In particular, I used the carbon copy to duplicate the sketch for the left & right flanges. Seemed to be a bit awkward as I had to remove and re-establish some constraints because it had to be centered on the angled "dowel." I'm thinking there may be a better method.

The beam is not a square. So a square Pipe was not giving the right beam.
