The latest PUMA Microscope video is out (see https://youtu.be/1XmScHUicOs ) which shows you how to build the trans-polarising illumination system. Below is the FreeCAD design (together and exploded) with the real world 3D printed version bottom left and an example of polarised microscopy of citric acid crystals taken with the microscope using this system. The latest PUMA microscope video ( https://youtu.be/XEE-el7vC5k ) is out and discusses Köhler illumination - the method of illumination used by most professional light microscopes today. After a historical introduction going over Dr Köhler's original paper (written in German - English translation also provided) I show you some of Köhler's original photomicrographs from the day (1893) and then go on to show how to build your own Köhler illuminator from scratch for the PUMA microscope (all designed in FreeCAD of course - although I used a different package to do the optical path CAD).
I know this will be a bit too specialist unless you are a microscopist but I think there are lessons to be learnt re designing practical instruments with FreeCAD and 3D printing hence I post about it here.

Hello. December's PUMA Microscope video is out and is on the 'Long Legs stand System' (see https://youtu.be/W5CvPGi-eL8 ). The system was designed in FreeCAD to allow either level viewing (e.g. if looking at fluid samples) or slant back at 35 degrees for comfortable neck position viewing. There is also a screw mechanism on the hind leg to give adjustable levelling. All parts designed to be 3D printed (see examples of the stand on a real microscope bottom left of the figure). All available on GitHub ( https://github.com/TadPath/PUMA ). If you are new to PUMA you will be better off seeing the introduction video first (here https://youtu.be/7UbkrZyNgpo ) because teh current video is really only useful to people who are actually building the scope. Stay tuned to the PUMA channel - next year I will be showing you 'how to's on more exciting optics modules for the scope including beam splitters, beam joiners, the augmented reality projector (a kind of custom objective lens) and more.

The next PUMA microscope video is in the final stages of editing and will be about beam splitters and the advanced filter block. As a pre-release heads-up, here is a screenshot showing how some of the educational content of the video was made using the excellent 'Optics Workbench' for FreeCAD made by GitHub user 'chbergmann' which was also showcased on this forum some time ago:

The next installment of the open source PUMA microscope video tutorial guide is out and is about 'Beam Splitters and the Advanced Filter Block'. It also contains some general tutorial sections about microscope Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) and Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) standards - made with FreeCAD. Links:

The latest instalment of the open source 3D printed portable PUMA microscope is out on YouTube and is about epi-illumination including epi-fluorescence and reflected light microscopy with episcopic polarisation:

Of course I used FreeCAD to design all the parts. The picture illustrates the epi-stop which prevents light from the free edges of the beamsplitter from clouding the image during epi-illumination. Also is shown the epi-black body light sink (or 'black hole' as I call it) which prevents the light passing straight through the 50:50 beamsplitter from bouncing straight back and up the ocular to contaminate the image. Details are given in the video.
BTW - if any of you are microelectronics engineers I would be grateful if you can help identify the silicon chip circuit components shown in the video - just leave your wisdom in the YT comments for all to benefit.

The latest PUMA Microscope video is out on YouTube and discusses the various ocular head options for this DIY 3D printed open source professional microscope. The figure shows the FreeCAD models used in the making the adjustable arm of the ergo monocular (variable viewing angle monocular viewer). All designed to be easily 3D printed with a budget printer (I only have an Ender 3 myself - so everything you see in the video is made with an Ender 3 and black PLA).
