Garden Railway Bogie

Post by Vailala »

Garden Railway bogie. Drawn from photos and information taken from a works drawing. 24” gauge prototype. The model is drawn at 1:13.7 scale to run on 45 mm gauge track. Drawn for 3d printing by SLS. Dimensions are to scale except where modified to increase strength and rigidity and 3d printer limitations.

Drawing 19th century style ‘curly-spoked’ wheels is an easy task in FreeCad. All done on the Part Workbench.

Cheers

Did you model only a quarter and used the mirror twice?

The wheels are done with cylinders and a 3 degree cone for the wheel tread. A single spoke is cut using a pair of cylinders that bracket the centre point. This spoke is trimmed and fused to the hub. The fusion is copied and spun 60 degrees 5 times (for a 6 spoke wheel). The original spoke and boss and the 5 copies are fused to the outer rim and the whole is fused. Fillets are applied to the head and foot of each spoke. The wheel has a 27.8 mm diameter.

Using FreeCAD it’s possible to draw and 3d print shapes that are next to impossible to make, at least in these sizes. This wheelset, including the axle, prints out for about $3.50.

I was unclear when citing only a small portion of the original post. I meant the whole Garden Railway bogie. It looks symmetric and thus could be the result of a double mirror. The wheel itself could use a polar array.

Yes, basically you are correct. Half a side was drawn and mirrored to make up two sides. The other bits were then added. The bogie is only partly symmetrical as this underside view shows.
