end of Drawing workbench and its wiki pages

Post by david69 »

with this version, Drawing workbench is removed from the official workbenches.

Code: Select all

OS: Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS (LXDE/Lubuntu)
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.21.
Build type: Release
Branch: unknown
Hash: 073bf3215c17a2db0175a7c377a3b3a4b38bb0f0
Python 3.6.9, Qt 5.9.5, Coin 4.0.0a, Vtk 7.1.1, OCC 7.5.2
Locale: French/France (fr_FR)

  * Help 1.0.1-alpha
should we keep all the wiki pages related to this workbench?

I think it was when we moved to 0.17 that the pages describing the old 0.16 version where "outsourced" but still avalable as "Legacy pages". Can we do the same here?
A Sketcher Lecture with in-depth information is available in English, auf Deutsch, en français, en español.

I think you are referring to the legacy Spreadsheet WB. That was pretty strange. The legacy WB page was kept, but all links on the page pointed to commands that (also) belonged to the new WB. All in all not well thought out, or useful. Which is why I have deleted that page.

But we do have to think about versioning now. In the past we could point to the compiled Help when a user asked about this. But we no longer produce a compiled Help file. Maybe @yorik has some ideas in that regard. It would be nice to have a system in place when we reach the 1.0 landmark.

The Drawing Workbench is still included in V0.20. For that reason alone the documentation has to be kept. It is also referred to on other pages, so other portions of the Wiki have to be updated before we remove this WB from the Wiki.

yes, you are right Roy. I've forgotten the point the 0.20 still show this workbench, my bad.
and yesterday, as I was revising some translations of the wiki, we have here and there are pages pointing to Drawing pages.

The new documentation at https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD-documentation is handled by git and therefore taggable. That's one of the objectives. So it now has a "0.20" tag that corresponds to release 0.20. So basically anyone will be able to get back to a specific version of the docs...

Thanks. So if I understand correctly a user looking for the 0.20 documentation, say, 3 years from now would have to download a zip file.

For now yes, but later on we can set the Help module to automatically tap into a specific tagged version

or read it directly through github, or if they know enough git they can checkout the tag in their clone of the repo.

Or maybe adding some infos in the Wiki of the Github repo.

I know a little of GitHub, but having documentation on "how to do things" will be useful, as not everytime memory is helping.

If the version were made as branch, probably it would be handy, as it will be a matter to switch from the main page with the "Branch" ListBox.

I am not a Git specialist, but wouldn't it be possible to create a separate branch for each version? A user would then only have to change the URL in the new Help addon.
