Assembly challenges

Post by thomas-neemann »

parametric is not required. all possibilities of freecad and freecad addons can be used. here is my suggestion in about 4 minutes (out of the box)

the center distance is 478.74 mm

I was able to assemble this in about 6 minutes with on-board resources. is it faster with addons or something else?

start11aug.FCStd
Is it possible to fix the parts of start11Aug together, so it will be impossible to move them relative to each other, with transform or attachment or placement ?
Something with link maybe ?

Thanks for your post.

Thomas thanks for your prompt response but still I can move the Compound001 relatively to Compound just using the transform tool.
I am looking for a way to make them fixed to each other even if using transform, Placement, Attachment. I think it is called Assembly constraint.
Maybe the MakeLink could help ?

But would that be parametric, as in: "FreeCAD, your own 3D parametric modeler " ? To be honest, I think you're giving FreeCAD a disservice by promoting your way of doing "assemblies". You're method is fast only because you're not really doing a parametric assembly, but you always "forget" to mention this aspect.

I will make sure to always mention it in the future. in my environment, speed is more important than parametric

I am not intended to do parametric modelling at least at present. I am just looking for a way to "FIX" together two points which belong to two different bodies. E.g. a vertex from a cube and one vertex from a prism. For example how can I fix 'Body.Prism.Vertex2' with ''Body001.Box.Vertex2'.Fixing means that Tranforming, Placement, Attachment will not separate those two points. Of course the two bodies will be free to rotate but the rotation axis must pass throu those two points.

I am wandering if MakeLink could do this.

I have heard this argument ever so often. And at the end of the day it was every single time more or even much more expensive to do things quick and dirty.

- Make a Union of the two
- create a SimpleCopy of the Union
- delete the Union and its constituents.

This will fix the two inseparable to each other.
