Only 4 months late with part two! - which I haven't completed because I found out that the method had been worked out by some very clever people already. Here is a link to the subject which I found on the Internet Archive (A wonderful free resource).

https://archive.org/details/arudimentar ... mode/thumb

and this

https://www.arct.cam.ac.uk/system/files ... lacios.pdf

I did attempt to create a model of the support system that might have been used - the file is attached.
Basically a false work system made out of timber poles and planks with frames to support the stonework which in turn were supported supported by wedges that could be removed after the complete vault was constructed. This would enable the frames to be removed.

I have also attached a few images of how I would have drawn this up 500 years ago :D .

My conclusions:
There is a huge amount of work in creating then building a dome like this
The architects and masons were geniuses.
Its puts most of our modern day architecture to shame.
We people of this era need to protect this knowledge and promote these skills.

I had the privilege of watching the stonemasons working on St Paul's Cathedral producing replacement carvings - what a wonderful skill that is.

Cool!
Thanks for sharing this.
When I see the wooden support structure in your file, I can understand
why they cutted down all trees in europe... ;)
Brunelleschi made it without support:

BTW:
Maybe you should open a new thread about the dome topic.

They must have cut a few trees down in Australia for the Exhibition building dome also Thomas!! Even though it is only about 20 metres span.

Thanks for the link and the video - Brunelleschi was a genius. My head is spinning thinking about how he did that without a support structure.

Not sure about the new thread - maybe we could set a FreeCAD challenge “Solve the Brunelleschi’s Gothic Dome Construction Secret” - I am sure CAD 1234 would rise to such a challenge :D

There are a few famous house models in User showcase,
or Open discussion to talk how it is achieved,
or Arch, there are more knowledge on building.

FEA is relatively a small group. You model could have a big audience. If more about fea, stay here.

Enjoyed your topic.

Thanks for the advice John - I will do that. I have enjoyed this topic not only for what I have learned but also for the people I have interacted with on this forum.
Strength of connections and structural members is something I have always been interested in because when I was a construction worker when a young man this issue was (and of course remains) a life and death issue. We have touched briefly on the shear capacity of bolts somewhere on this thread. This may also be a topic worthy of discussion on a new thread. Thanks again

For me it works, thanks.
Found this (rename extension to xls):
AISC141viewer_xls.txt
some of them have been added to BOLTS ... https://github.com/boltsparts/BOLTS_archive/pull/264 BOLTS for FreeCAD has been updated. use AddOn manager to update BOLTSFC

@Laurie Hartley.
Finally I could have a look at the dropbox models from your PM.
Even the lock-pins are drawn. Nice work!

I haven't been on this thread for quite some time so first let me apologise for going off on a tangent in my last couple of posts - I plead "old codger".

Back on topic! I have been trying to emulate the the efforts of amongst others @thschrader and @cad1234 in setting up a model for the frame analysis. I have attached a file which produces the various results - displacements and stressors when I click on the
CCX Results Icon in the menu tree but I do not get the option to chooses the rendered results when I click on the Pipeline CCX results icon.

I have this choice when I open other files so I have concluded that it is not the software or my system - me

If someone could have a look at the file attached* and tell me where I have gone wrong I would greatly appreciate it because I have another totally different configured project in mind but I would like to use this technique.

I had to delete the mesh and results because of file size but I have attached an image of my gmsh settings.

Thanks in anticipation.
