The problem now is how to only select one complete set of the 3 superimposed copies. I tried to select a layer of one of the copies and there is no way to join the edges as I always get a broken face error. I also can not select the top copy and create a new file as you suggested as the copy option...

I went back to my original DXF file and carefully looked at it. opened it in different programs and there are NO COPIES. The DXF cad programs and file is not the problem. This madness happens during the Freecad DXF import. Sheesh !! Therefore freecad seemingly adds bogus multiple copies of the same...

No worries. Your Dxf contains 2 figures. 1 in Shape - Shape166 and the one we've been working with in Shape167 - Shape222. So hide Shape - Shape166 or copy Shape167 - Shape222 into another document (that's what I did). Select 167-222, then DraftToSketch. Now you have Sketch - Sketch055. Open Sketche...

It seems that the DXF import routine is incapable of fitting splines or even polynomials over three points and does straight line approximations of the curves in the original DXF.
