Re: Octagonal Timber Roof

It's explained here: https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-your-iphone-photos-sometimes-appear-upside-down-2014-10 I think Windows and Apple have a different idea about which way is up! Photo was taken with an iPhone which records EXIF data to specify orientation which Windows often ignores. Re:...

Octagonal Timber Roof

I needed to replace the roof of my octagonal gazebo which was damaged in a storm. The roof is a timber frame, and will have a coloursteel roof (when the steel arrives!) I looked around for a CAD program to design it with. I was convinced by FreeCAD because it is parameter driven (and free). I wanted...

Re: Pad up to face OR mirror body

OK got it. Problem is that of a newby. "Mirror" appears in several places. So to fix my V7 I need to be in PartDesign WB and then Apply a Pattern - Mirrored. I had tried Part - Mirror a selected shape and Draft -mirror selected objects and got nowhere. It didn't occur to me to look in Appl...

Re: Pad up to face OR mirror body

I have recast things a bit. I have removed the Part container (as there is only 1 part) so the bodies are all at the top level. I do not know how to tell if the file is broken or not. I think the individual bodies look OK. The end result I want is tech drawings of each piece of wood with dimensions ...

Re: Create body raised above global origin, rotated and tilted

Yes, the whole roof is a Part, but I meant to refer to a Body within it. I am making each timber a Body, and once I have them done, I can to a polar rotation to replicate the 8 pieces. I didn't find the Euler angles at first in placement. I clicked on the 3 dots and got more data, but I didn't reali...

Pad up to face OR mirror body

I am trying to fit a noggin between 2 rafters in an octagonal roof. I am using Part Design. I sketched the cross section of the noggin (a simple rectangle) on a plane midway between rafters and padded it to the inside face of rafter . OK so far. I created rafter8 as a clone rotated by 45 deg, and by...

Create body raised above global origin, rotated and tilted

I am still struggling with my octagonal roof timbers. I need to create a body which will hold several solids: the roof sheet, and the supporting timbers. The body needs to be 920mm up, and rotated by 22.5deg and tilted down by 30deg from the global origin. I thought I could do a placement of the bod...

Re: Cannot select line on datum plane, tech draw advice pse.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have proceeded reasonably well now and with a bit of slicing have got the 4 different different timber pieces modelled in 3D. I now need to do TechDrawing so that I can show the angles and dimensions of the cuts. The hip rafter is easy enough as there was a view normal ...

Re: Cannot select line on datum plane

Thanks for your answer, but I am still having problem. I reworked it a bit, so that the rafters are an array in draft rather than in part design as they are separate solids. I still can't select the edges that form the datum plane as constraints for the noggins. I've tried selecting and deselecting ...

Cannot select line on datum plane

Hi I am new to FreeCAD. I am trying to model an octagonal timber roof frame so I can replace the roof on my gazebo. I have modelled the rafters (hips) OK, but I need to place noggins (dwangs) in between the rafters. I have created a datum plane spanning the insde edges of 2 adjacent rafters in Part ...
